Kenyan singer Wahu Kagwi has opened up about the pressure that came with constantly being viewed as a “strong woman”, revealing that the label eventually left her feeling overwhelmed.

Wahu shared the candid message on Saturday, September 26, as she reflected on a time when she felt she had to keep everything together and always be available to the people around her.

According to the singer, she eventually realised that being labelled strong had created expectations she could no longer meet.
“The moment I realised being labelled as ‘strong’ was a doorway to overwhelm…I let go. Of holding it together, & being there for everyone, of striving for perfection,” Wahu said.

Wahu embraces her ‘baby gal era’

Rather than continuing to push herself to meet those expectations, Wahu said she decided to approach life differently.
The singer explained that she had started embracing rest and doing things simply because they made her happy. She also said she had become more comfortable asking for help when she needed it.

“I welcomed rest, and normalised doing things because they make me happy, asking for help, and officially entered my baby gal era,” she added.
Her “baby gal era” comment quickly gives the revelation a lighter and more playful side, with Wahu making it clear that she is allowing herself to enjoy life without feeling like she must always be the person who has everything under control.

Wahu has juggled several roles.

Wahu has spent years balancing her career in music with business and family responsibilities.
The singer, who has been active in the Kenyan music industry since the early 2000s, has also been involved in the beauty business through Afro Siri Salon. She has previously spoken about the challenge of balancing business, music and family life.

Away from her career, Wahu is married to fellow musician David Mathenge, popularly known as Nameless. The couple celebrated 21 years of marriage earlier this month and have three daughters.
Over the years, Wahu and Nameless have also built their careers while raising their family, often giving fans glimpses of their life together.
For Wahu, being strong no longer appears to mean handling everything alone. Instead, she is choosing to rest, seek help when necessary and make room for the things that bring her happiness.
