Milimani affordable housing project in Kakamega/ RAYMOND OMOLLO X

The Boma Yangu Milimani Affordable Housing Project in Kakamega is now fully occupied, with all 220 homes completed under Phase I taken up by families, Interior PS Raymond Omollo has said.

Omollo said the project was providing families with modern and dignified living spaces while contributing to economic activity in the surrounding area.

Commissioned by President William Ruto in March 2026, the first phase has developed into a planned residential community with supporting infrastructure and amenities, he said.

“Phase I is now fully occupied, with all 220 completed homes providing families with modern and dignified living spaces,” Omollo said in a statement.

According to the PS, residents have access to paved walkways, roads and parking spaces within the development.

The estate also features landscaped green spaces and recreational areas, alongside lighting infrastructure intended to support security within the community.

Omollo said the benefits of the project extended beyond providing housing, with its construction and subsequent occupation creating economic opportunities for people and businesses in the area.

“The completed phase has also become an economic hub, creating opportunities for local artisans, youth, suppliers, traders and service providers during and after construction,” he stated.

The project, he added, has generated demand for a range of goods and services as residents settle into the estate, with businesses around the development benefiting from increased economic activity.

“Increased demand for goods and services around the estate continues to circulate income within the local economy,” Omollo said.

He described the development as an example of how investment in affordable housing could have an impact beyond the provision of residential units by supporting livelihoods and stimulating local economic activity.

The project forms part of the government's wider affordable housing programme under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which identifies housing as one of the priority areas for economic transformation.

Omollo linked the progress at the Kakamega development to the government's broader plans for Kenya's next phase of transformation beyond Vision 2030.

He said the success stories emerging from BETA were providing a foundation for the country's next phase of development, with the Kakamega housing project offering a tangible example of the potential impact of investment in housing.

The completed estate, he noted, has also addressed security measures to protect residents and safeguard the development.

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support the project by facilitating security and safeguarding the development and its residents,” Omollo remarked.

The department's involvement includes supporting security arrangements around the housing development as residents occupy the completed units.

The occupation of all 220 homes marks the completion of the first phase of the Milimani project.

The government has continued to position affordable housing as a programme capable of addressing housing needs while creating employment and business opportunities through construction and related activities.
