Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege during a rally

Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege has declared her support for President William Ruto’s re-election on the UDA ticket in 2027.

However she has expressed reservations about Governor Johnson Sakaja’s bid for a second term at City Hall.

Speaking at a campaign rally in South B, Chege raised concerns over the implementation of Sakaja’s 2022 campaign manifesto, particularly the distribution of development projects across Nairobi’s wards.

She argued that some areas represented by MCAs critical of the county administration had not received adequate attention.

Chege also said gaps in the delivery of devolved services had, in some instances, resulted in the National Government stepping in to implement projects that fall within the responsibilities of the Nairobi County Government.

“Governor Sakaja neglected Nairobi and that is why the National Government came to our rescue. We don’t see our governor and that is why we have to ask His Excellency the President to intervene for us to get development”, she said.

“We have written 34 disaster reports and not even a single one was responded to by the governor”, she added.

She called on UDA to consider its options for the Nairobi gubernatorial race ahead of the 2027 election, suggesting that the party should assess whether a different candidate could better address the concerns raised by residents.

“Sakaja has not met the expectations of many Nairobians. There are areas where more needs to be done in delivering devolved government services, and the National Government has had to step in to support some projects,” Chege said.

Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, who also addressed the rally, called for President Ruto’s re-election, arguing that he should be given a second term to complete projects initiated during his first term.

Wachira cited former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, who each served two terms, arguing that President Ruto should similarly be given another term to advance projects started during his first administration.

“This ExpressWay was built by Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in his second term. Thika Super Highway was built by the late Mwai Kibaki in his second term”, PS Wachira said.

Meanwhile, Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu urged voters to assess political candidates based on their policies, performance and track records rather than tribal affiliations.
