Fire incident

A two-year-old child died after a fire broke out in an apartment in the Kobil area of Embakasi, Nairobi, in an incident that has left police investigating the cause of the blaze.

The fire was reported after a tenant noticed smoke coming from a house on the first floor and alerted the apartment’s caretaker.

The caretaker rushed to the house and found it filled with heavy smoke. She raised the alarm, prompting members of the public to respond.

Together with a Nairobi County Government fire engine, they managed to put out the fire.

However, police said the two-year-old boy was found fatally burned inside the house.

Household property of unknown value was also destroyed in the fire.

The cause of the blaze had not been established by the time of reporting.

Crime scene investigation officers from Embakasi processed the scene as police launched investigations.

The child’s body was removed and taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy, Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud said.

Meanwhile, police in Bungoma have launched a manhunt for a workshop owner accused of fatally assaulting his employee following a disagreement over the sale of goods.

The incident occurred on September 21, 2026, at a workshop in Khalaba Sub-Location, Township Location, Bungoma South Sub-County.

Police received a report about a body lying at the workshop and sent a team to the scene, where officers confirmed the death.

Preliminary investigations established that the deceased, identified as John Wanjala, aged about 30, was an employee at the workshop.

Police said Wanjala had reportedly disagreed with his employer over the sale of goods, including sofa sets, wall units and other items stocked at the workshop.

The disagreement allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the suspect is accused of assaulting Wanjala with crude weapons.

Wanjala sustained multiple injuries, which police suspect were inflicted using a blunt object, and later died from the injuries.

The suspect allegedly fled after the incident and remained at large as police launched a search for him.

CSI officers processed and documented the scene before Wanjala’s body was moved to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and pursuing the suspect.

In Siaya, police have launched investigations after a mutilated female body was discovered in a bush near Kowet Shopping Centre in Nyamila Sub-Location.

The discovery was reported on September 21 at about 3:39pm after members of the public spotted suspected human body parts in the bush.

Police officers from Kowet Police Station, accompanied by DCI detectives and CSI personnel from Siaya Sub-County, visited the scene.

They found the mutilated body of an unidentified woman. The body was missing both hands and a left limb, while the skull was discovered about 50 metres from the rest of the remains.

The body parts were collected and taken to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary.

CSI officers processed and documented the scene as detectives began efforts to establish the woman’s identity and the circumstances surrounding her death.

Preliminary inquiries indicated that the woman was not known in the area. Police also said no missing person had been reported in the locality in recent months.

The remains are being preserved pending a postmortem examination and efforts to establish the woman’s identity.

Detectives are also expected to establish whether the remains could be linked to a missing person report from outside the area.
