Former Attorney General Justin Muturi /FILEFormer Attorney General Justin Muturi has disowned a statement circulating on social media and attributed to him, saying the quote was fabricated.
In a statement on Thursday, Muturi urged members of the public to disregard the graphic and not share it.
“FAKE NEWS. The statement circulating in this graphic is fabricated and should be disregarded immediately,” Muturi said.
The fake statement purported to be Muturi’s comment on Senator Edwin Sifuna and opposition leaders working together under the United Opposition.
The message portrayed leaders who refused to work with opposition figures as “agents” of the government.
Muturi said the circulating statement amounted to political propaganda intended to create divisions within the opposition.
“Political propaganda will not substitute for facts. Do not be misled by fake quotes manufactured to create division within the opposition,” he said.
He called for political disagreements and arguments to be made openly and honestly rather than through forged statements.
“Let political arguments be made openly, honestly and on the basis of facts, not forged statements,” Muturi said.
Muturi concluded by urging the public to disregard the statement and refrain from circulating it.
“DISREGARD. DO NOT SHARE,” he said.
