The Hot 96 broadcasters tested each other on the Kiswahili names of different colours, with some answers leaving them laughing.
Veteran journalist Jeff Koinange and broadcaster Immanuel Ndung’u have amused Kenyans after getting caught up in a playful Kiswahili challenge during a Hot 96 studio session.
The two broadcasters were seated at the station’s studio when Ndung’u decided to test Koinange’s knowledge of Kiswahili by asking him to name different colours.
The simple challenge quickly became a comedy of errors as both men found some of the answers harder than expected.

Jeff struggles with 'brown'
Ndung’u first asked Koinange for the Kiswahili word for brown.

Ndung’u then attempted to provide a correction, saying “kahawiwi”, before admitting that he was not completely certain about the answer himself.
“Even I don’t know,” Ndung’u said as the two continued laughing.
The exchange did not end there.
Koinange then turned the challenge around and asked Ndung’u to name the Kiswahili word for blue.
This time, Ndung’u answered “samawati” before giving “kijani” for green.
The pair, however, ran into another problem when purple came up.
Koinange attempted to give an answer but could not settle on the correct word. Ndung’u also did not provide a correction, instead laughing along as the challenge continued.
Kenyans react to the clip.
The video has since circulated on social media, attracting reactions from Kenyans amused by the broadcasters' attempts.
Some viewers questioned the pair's answers, while others focused on the fact that both men were comfortable enough to laugh at themselves during the exchange.
The clip recorded on Tuesday, September 22, highlighted several reactions from social media users, including people questioning the use of “kahawiwi” and joking about the duo's performance.
A different side of the broadcasters
Koinange has spent decades in journalism and broadcasting, including work with CNN and Kenyan television and radio. He has also been associated with Hot 96 for years.
In February 2026, Royal Media Services reshuffled its radio line-up, moving Koinange and Patrick Igunza from the Hot Breakfast show to the station's Drive Show.
For the two broadcasters, however, the language challenge offered a lighter studio moment — and gave their online audience plenty to debate.
