Kenya faces a major shortage of proficient sign language interpreters, with fewer than 100 serving about 150,000 deaf persons. Head of KSL and Inclusive Communication at NCPWD Linda Chebet says more professionals need to be trained to bridge the gap. Chebet spoke as Kenya marked International Sign Language Day in Bungoma County, which has more than 5,000 deaf persons. She says the celebrations will help raise awareness and encourage the county to align its programmes with the needs of deaf persons.
