A video showing Merishaw School boys tucking into Kentucky Fried Chicken on a school trip has taken over Kenyan social media, with many users torn between admiration and playful nostalgia for their own bread-and-soda outings.

What the video shows

The clip, filmed inside a school bus, captures the boys in uniform passing round KFC boxes and sodas with obvious delight.

An outdoor shot at the start shows the students boarding the bus before the scene shifts to a relaxed, shared meal.

Teachers travelling with the group were also seen digging into the same treat, seated among the boys rather than apart from them.

The school's message

Merishaw, a private boys' school in Isinya, Kajiado County, posted the video with a statement on what it says boarding life should offer its students, whom it refers to as "Morans."

"At Merishaw School, we believe that school life should be filled with more than just books and classrooms."

The school linked the gesture to its wider philosophy of student welfare.

"We don't just educate boys; we care for them, nurture them, and give them an environment where they can thrive."

It added that a well-supported student is better placed to succeed both academically and physically.

Generational Divide and Hilarious Online Reactions

For many Kenyans raised in the public education system, fast food on a school outing remains unthinkable. For decades, standard trip fare meant plain bread and a soda bought at roadside stops.

Social media users quickly reacted with humor and self-deprecation:

  • @who.ismishy: "Then there is my school with bread and soda."

  • @nairobiandude: "What happened to soda na mkate?"

@luxury_perfume_oils_nbo: "Millennials who had soda and bread will say this is AI."

  • @hoodfave_gamer: "Where did I study?"

    @wakio_njuguna: "Millennials, we cannot relate."

The online banter highlights a widening cultural and economic gap between elite private institutions and the traditional public school experience in Kenya.

For a generation that grew up considering a Fanta and a slice of plain bread the height of school-trip luxury, watching uniformed boys casually pass around buckets of fried chicken felt almost surreal.
