Detectives are investigating an incident where a 23-year-old woman was injured by a bullet during a violent robbery in Maweni, Kisauni, Mombasa county, after a gang of three armed men confronted police officers responding to reports of attacks on members of the public.
The incident occurred at about 3:48 am on Saturday, September 19, in the Hodi Hodi area near Pastor Lai.
According to police, officers on patrol received information that a group of suspected robbers armed with machetes was terrorising residents in the area.
The officers proceeded towards the area and encountered three men allegedly robbing two people.
One of the victims was seated on the road while the other, a 23-year-old woman, was kneeling.
Police said the suspects charged towards the officers while brandishing machetes after spotting their motorcycle.
The officers alighted and fired three rounds into the air in an attempt to disperse the suspects.
The suspects then boarded their motorcycle and fled towards Bamburi town after stealing mobile phones from the two victims.
The man sustained injuries to his knees after falling from his motorcycle when he was accosted by the suspects, police said.
The woman sustained an injury to the lower part of her left buttock, initially suspected to have been caused by a sharp object. It later emerged she was hit by a bullet.
Both victims were taken to Coast General Hospital in stable condition.
An X-ray examination conducted on the woman, however, revealed a foreign object suspected to be a bullet head lodged in the lower part of her left buttock.
She remained admitted at the hospital in stable condition, with surgery scheduled to remove the object.
The man was treated and later discharged.
Police said the motorcycle was taken to Bamburi Police Station as investigations continued.
Police are investigating the robbery and the circumstances under which the woman was injured.
Elsewhere, a 23-year-old passenger was shot and injured while travelling in a vehicle along Old Mombasa Road in Mlolongo, Machakos county.
The shooting occurred at about 11 pm on September 19, 2026, near the 306 Hardware area in Mlolongo Township.
According to police, the driver was travelling in a grey Toyota Axio from the Diplomat area with two passengers when they heard gunshots.
The driver sped away after hearing the shots.
One of the passengers reportedly informed him that her colleague, who was seated in the left rear seat, had been shot in the right side of his forehead.
The occupants drove to Mlolongo Police Station and reported the incident before rushing the injured passenger to Life Care Hospital for treatment.
Police officers visited and processed the scene.
Investigators recovered one magazine containing 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition and three spent cartridges at the scene.
Police later visited the victim at the hospital and established that he was in fair condition.
The Toyota Axio was taken to Mlolongo Police Station for further examination as investigations into the shooting continued.
