Kenya’s university sector has expanded significantly, with the number of institutions reaching 83 in 2025. The Commission for University Education says total student enrollment rose to over 700,000 representing a 12.5 percent increase from 2024 and 26.4 percent growth since 2023. Female enrollment grew faster than male enrollment, narrowing the gender gap. The report says the growth reflects rising demand for university education and improved access across the country.
