The High Court has barred Parliament from reducing or withdrawing a former president's retirement benefits. Delivering judgment, Justice Bahati Mwamuye held that the Constitution protects these benefits more strongly than Parliament had purported to provide through legislation. The case was filed by civic advocacy group Sheria Mtaani, challenging a motion by Senator Samson Cherargei. The motion sought to review and vary a former president's benefits because of his continued leadership role in the Jubilee Party.
