Two children aged three and five died after a fire broke out in their home in Ndenderu, Kiambu county, on Saturday afternoon.

The victims were aged five and three, police and the family said.

According to police, the fire broke out at around 4 pm on September 19 in the Catholic Church area of Ndenderu.

Police officers responded to the incident and established that the children were inside a semi-permanent house made of timber and iron sheets and rented by their 24-year-old mother.

Police said the mother had left the children alone in the house at around 7am to report to work at a supermarket in Ndenderu Market.

The fire was eventually extinguished by the Kiambaa Fire Brigade, with assistance from police officers and members of the public.

The cause of the fire had not been established, police said amid investigations.

Crime Scene Investigation officers processed and documented the scene before the bodies of the two children were moved to SDA Mortuary in Kihara, pending further investigations and postmortem examinations.

The incident left the mother devastated.

Meanwhile a three-year-old boy drowned in a well at his grandfather’s farm in Kawathi Village, Gikuuri Sublocation, Embu East Subcounty.

The incident occurred on September 17, 2026, police said.

Police officers visited the scene and established that the deceased was Brian Munene Mutugi.

According to the boy’s mother, she had been with her son while fetching water from the well. After returning home, she left him playing alone at the farm.

A short while later, the boy’s grandfather, John Njeru Ndwiga, went to the farm and found the child’s body floating in the well.

The grandfather retrieved the body and alerted the boy’s father.

They rushed the child to Ena Tenri Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
