Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana was left deeply moved during the funeral of his eight-year-old daughter after receiving an unexpected M-Pesa transaction from a stranger.
The senator’s youngest child, Amal Mghoi Mungatana, died on Sunday, 13 September 2026, at Gertrude's Children's Hospital in Muthaiga, Nairobi. She was laid to rest on Friday, 18 September 2026, at Ngao Village in Tana River County.
Speaking during the burial service, Senator Mungatana recounted how a young Kenyan reached out to him with a heartfelt gesture. The well-wisher sent a small mobile money transfer accompanied by a brief message of comfort.
The senator shared the exact message he received from the young man during the funeral service.
"Kuna kijana amenitumia pesa kwa M-Pesa, akaniambia: 'Mheshimiwa pole sana, lakini nakutumia hii shilingi mia moja ndio niko nayo kwa simu, kwa sasa...halafu baadaye nitakutumia ile nimepata.'"
The sender fulfilled his promise shortly after making the initial transfer. He sent an additional Sh150, bringing his total contribution to Sh250.
Senator Mungatana explained that the gesture stood out amidst the official condolence messages sent by national leaders and dignity figures. He expressed deep appreciation for the selfless act.
"Huyo nimemmark and I will revenge seriously na nimeshukuru sana."
Long Battle with Health Challenges
Amal Mghoi Mungatana was the last-born daughter of Senator Mungatana and Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga. She passed away following a lifelong battle with chronic illness.
Family statements revealed that the eight-year-old girl had faced medical challenges since birth. She had undergone extensive medical care both within Kenya and abroad over the course of her life.
Her family expressed gratitude for the moments of joy, warmth, and laughter she brought into their lives during periods when her condition improved.
The young girl’s passing drew expressions of sympathy from across the country. President William Ruto extended his condolences to the bereaved family, stating that the loss of a child is a sorrow beyond measure. People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua also offered her prayers and support to the family.
Senator Mungatana has served as the Senator for Tana River County since 2022. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Garsen Constituency from 2002 to 2013, holding several assistant ministerial appointments in government.
