The Moja Expressway Company has announced a three-day traffic diversion at the Westlands entrance to allow scheduled maintenance and construction works along the overpass deck.

In a traffic advisory posted on Friday, the company said the works will begin on Saturday, September 19, 2026, and run until Monday, September 21.

CBD-bound motorists travelling from the James Gichuru Junction direction have been advised to avoid the elevated overpass deck during the works and instead use the lower A8 road, Waiyaki Way.

“Scheduled maintenance along the overpass deck in Westlands from tomorrow 8 pm to Monday at noon. CBD-bound motorists from James Gichuru Junction direction are advised to use Waiyaki Way,” the company said in the advisory.

The company clarified that the Nairobi Expressway Westlands Entrance would remain operational throughout the maintenance period.

The advisory affects motorists travelling towards the Central Business District from the James Gichuru Junction side, who would ordinarily use the elevated section to access the Westlands entrance.

Outbound traffic exiting the Nairobi Expressway towards the overpass is expected to resume normal operations from Saturday at 5 pm, according to the company.

Motorists using the affected route have been urged to exercise caution and follow directions from traffic marshals deployed along the route.

The company said the temporary traffic arrangement would enable maintenance and construction works to be carried out on the elevated overpass deck while keeping the Westlands entrance available to motorists.

The maintenance comes as the Nairobi Expressway continues to undertake works on its infrastructure to maintain the road and associated facilities.

The company said it regretted the inconvenience caused by the diversion and thanked motorists for their patience and cooperation.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway," the advisory said in conclusion.

Motorists using the route during the maintenance period have been advised to take note of the diversion before setting out, particularly those travelling towards the CBD from James Gichuru Junction.

The Nairobi Expressway remains one of the capital’s key transport corridors, connecting Mlolongo to the Westlands area and easing travel through Nairobi by providing an alternative to heavily congested surface roads.

It is a 27-kilometre toll road that also links Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Central Business District heading to Westlands area.

The road was developed under a public-private partnership between the Government of Kenya and Moja Expressway Company.

The elevated highway was officially opened in 2022 and is designed to ease traffic congestion along the busy Mombasa Road–Uhuru Highway corridor.

It features multiple interchanges, entry and exit points, and a cashless tolling system for payments.
