Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has revealed that he acquired his first private jet at the age of 22 and a half. The President of Dangote Industries made the disclosure on Monday, 14 September 2026, in Lagos.

He was speaking during the official launch of the initial public offering (IPO) for his landmark oil refinery.

Dangote made the announcement at the Nigerian Exchange. The landmark stock operation aims to open a portion of the refinery's capital to individual retail investors.

Changing Personal Priorities

Reflecting on his career as a businessman, Dangote explained that he fully enjoyed that earlier phase of his life. However, his view on personal luxury travel has changed over time. He noted that he sees no downside to travelling on commercial flights today.

“I was telling somebody that right now, you know, I don't mind. I can take commercial, I can take anything. I had my first private jet at 22 years and a half,” he said.

Advocating for Industrial Investment

Dangote primarily used his personal anecdote to advocate for a shift in spending priorities. He urged wealthy citizens to redirect capital away from luxury assets and into domestic production.

He called on wealthy individuals who spend heavily on luxury aircraft to put those resources to active use.

"I try as much as possible to encourage people who are riding $900 million aircraft to please go and put that into action," Dangote said.

He emphasised that national growth requires active manufacturing.

"We are not going to create a great nation without doing something productive," he stated.

The industrialist recounted a recent experience in Nigeria's capital city to illustrate his point. "It took me 30 minutes to find a parking space in Abuja," he recalled. Seeing numerous private aircraft parked there inspired his call for more manufacturing facilities.

"I wish this place was full of factories, not private jets," Dangote remarked.

Key Figures of the Refinery IPO

The revelation coincided with the official launch of public share trading for the Dangote Refinery. The stock operation involves approximately 3% of the refinery's total capital.

According to figures reported by Reuters, the public offering targets 2.15 trillion naira if fully subscribed. The minimum investment threshold has been set at ten shares to encourage broad public participation. That minimum share requirement is currently equivalent to about four dollars.
