ODM Nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana /DOUGLAS OKIDDY
ODM-nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana has been unanimously elected chairperson of the Senate Roads, Transportation and Housing Committee.
Kibwana was elected on Tuesday at Parliament Buildings, replacing Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, who stepped down after being elevated to deputy minority whip.
Oketch took over the position previously held by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who was dewhipped following leadership changes instituted by the Opposition.
Sifuna fell out with ODM and other opposition leaders after declining to support the broad-based government arrangement.
In her inaugural speech, Kibwana thanked fellow senators for entrusting her with the leadership of the committee.
“It is a great honour, and I don’t take it for granted. I want to assure you that I will practise an open-door policy. We will work as a team to achieve the agenda of this committee,” she said.
Kibwana pledged to foster teamwork and ensure the committee delivers on its legislative and oversight responsibilities.
