Suspects in the murder case of Dr Victoria Mutiso Kevin Ngugi and Daniel Mwangi arraigned before Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai at Milimani Law Courts, Nairobi, on September 10, 2026 /LEAH MUKANGAI
A Nairobi court has allowed police four more days to hold two men suspected in the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso as investigations continue.
In an application filed before principal magistrate Paul Mutai at the Milimani chief magistrate’s court on September 10, police officer Romana Odour, attached to the Homicide Investigations Department, urged the two suspects must remain in custody for another seven days
The suspects, Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kevin Ngugi Kinuthia, were arrested on August 7 and arraigned on August 10.
They were initially granted a 30-day custodial period, which was due to expire. Njoroge is being held at Pangani Police Station, while Kinuthia is at Gigiri Police Station.
Police said releasing the two suspects would hinder the ongoing investigation, as investigators were still waiting for reports from the National Forensic Laboratory, including cybercrime and forensic analyses.
The Financial Reporting Centre had also not submitted a financial report that police said was needed to question the suspects about the financial aspects of the case.
Police further said they needed more time to record statements from newly identified witnesses, some of whom live outside Nairobi.
Investigators also said they needed to travel to trace and interview other suspects. According to the police application, investigators believe the respondents may not have acted alone and that additional charges could follow.
Police cited public safety as another reason for seeking the extension, saying the case had generated widespread public interest and outrage.
They also said they feared the suspects could face retaliation or mob justice if released, given that their identities had become known to the public.
The police further expressed concern that the suspects could interfere with witnesses or destroy evidence if released.
However, Magistrate Mutai declined the request for seven more days, saying the two had been in custody for a prolonged period.
He instead granted police four days to conclude their inquiries.
Dr Mutiso, a clinical psychologist, was killed on the morning of July 29.
