Popular Kenyan music duo Vijana Barubaru have officially announced a break from creating music together as a group. The Nairobi-based outfit, made up of singer Tuku Kantu and rapper Mwana Wa Wambui, confirmed the decision through a statement shared on their social media platforms.
The two artists plan to use the hiatus to focus on individual creative projects after years of joint success.
A New Season of Solo Pursuits
The announcement marks a transition for the group, who built a strong following through their blend of Afropop, vocal harmonies, and spoken-word influences. In their joint release, the musicians described the hiatus as a natural progression in their personal and artistic development.
"Today, we want to share that we are entering a new season of our music careers."

"As artists and as individuals, we have both continued to grow, and out of the desire to further explore our creative journeys, we have decided to go on a hiatus to focus on our solo careers," the statement read.
They added that the move is driven by a search for artistic growth, stating simply: "This is about self-discovery."
From Mathare Roots to Regional Hits
Formed in Mathare, Nairobi, the group took their name from the Swahili phrase for "Young Men." Tuku Kantu provided smooth vocals and songwriting, while Mwana Wa Wambui, also known as Spikes Mshairi, contributed poetic rap verses. Their distinct style quickly resonated with listeners across East Africa.
The group broke into nationwide fame with their viral hit single "Sasa Hivi", featuring Ashley Music, which became a staple at weddings and social media challenges. They built on that success with subsequent releases, including "Ni Sawa" featuring Steph Kapela, which reached over 4 million views on YouTube. Over their years together, they also released popular bodies of work such as the PROVEN EP and the Passionate Pages EP, establishing themselves as a prominent act in contemporary Kenyan pop music.
Brotherhood and Future Prospects
Reflecting on their joint journey, the musicians expressed deep appreciation for the fanbase that supported them throughout their rise. They emphasised that their personal bond remains intact despite the professional shift.

Looking ahead, they asked their listeners to support their respective individual journeys.
"In the same spirit, we invite you to experience what those same voices will become in this next chapter we are ushering in," they wrote, concluding with a call to "continue making great memories and music."
Both artists are expected to share details of their upcoming solo projects in due course.
