Kenya currently recycles only about 8 per cent of its plastic waste, highlighting major gaps in packaging waste recovery. An estimated 224,000 tonnes of plastic packaging were placed on the Kenyan market in 2022, but only 8 per cent was formally recycled. Plastic bottles have a higher recycling rate, estimated at 25 per cent. Kenya aims to increase plastic-packaging recycling to 40 per cent by 2030.
