President William Ruto has departed for Zambia to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Ruto left Kenya on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, for the ceremony following Hichilema’s re-election in the August 13 presidential election.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki saw off Ruto as he departed for Zambia.

Ruto had earlier congratulated Hichilema on his re-election, describing the victory as a sign of the confidence Zambians have placed in his leadership.

“Your resounding and decisive victory is a testament to your unwavering dedication, perseverance and commitment to the advancement of Zambia,” Ruto said.

He also said Kenya attaches great importance to its relationship with Zambia, describing the country as a “brotherly nation” and an important regional partner.

“Kenya holds its relations with the Republic of Zambia in high esteem,” Ruto said.

The President noted that Kenya and Zambia have developed cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels over the years.

“Over the years, our two countries have fostered deep and enduring cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels,” he said.

Ruto said he looked forward to working with Hichilema to strengthen ties between the two countries during his second term.

“Dear Brother, I look forward to continuing to work closely with you to further solidify and broaden the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two nations,” he said.

He also wished Hichilema success as he begins his second term, while expressing hope for continued peace, unity and prosperity in Zambia.
