Kenya Power is set to deploy 426 young engineers to regional field operations after they completed the first phase of the company’s Graduate Trainee Programme.
The engineers completed a four-month intensive classroom training at the Kenya Power Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR), marking a step towards strengthening the company’s workforce and improving service delivery.
They will now undergo a five-month regional field rotation programme, where they will apply the knowledge and skills gained during their training.
The engineers are expected to strengthen operations, improve response times and support Kenya Power’s ongoing grid modernisation efforts.
Speaking during the closing ceremony for the first phase of the programme, Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO Dr (Eng.) Joseph Siror urged the engineers to embrace learning and remain committed to service delivery.
“I want to congratulate all our new engineers for this great milestone in their career. As a Company, we view these young talents as great ambassadors of Kenya Power and as they commence operations, I am confident that they will strengthen the Company’s technical capacity to attain our strategic goals,” said Siror.
Of the 426 graduate engineers, 328 are specialised in electrical engineering. The others have been trained in disciplines including geospatial, mechatronics, mechanical, civil engineering and ICT.
Kenya Power said their integration into existing teams is expected to create a strong pipeline of professionals who will contribute to the country’s energy sector.
The engineers are joining the company as its customer base reaches 10.4 million, amid growing demand for electricity and the accelerated rollout of electrification projects across the country.
Siror said the new engineers would play an important role as Kenya Power steps up efforts to modernise and digitise its electricity grid.
“To meet the growing needs of our customers, we are carrying out a lot of grid modernisation and digitisation projects. The knowledge and skills that the young engineers bring are critical to the actualisation of the Company’s aspiration to ride on technology and innovation in its next phase to provide better services and maintain its position as the leading energy utility in the region,” he said.
The deployment is expected to give the graduate engineers practical experience while adding new technical capacity to Kenya Power’s operations.
The company said the programme will support its efforts to strengthen service delivery as electricity demand and its customer base continue to grow.
