Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39. The Argentine captain confirmed his decision on Monday via a social media statement. His departure ends a historic 21-year international career with the national team.
He retires as Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer. Over his career, he made 207 appearances and scored 125 goals.
Delayed by Personal Tragedy
Messi wrote his retirement letter on 21 July, two days after the World Cup final. However, he delayed the announcement because of his father's failing health.
His father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, passed away in Rosario on 8 August at the age of 68. The loss solidified the forward’s decision to step away.
"Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before."
Messi’s senior career began on 17 August 2005 in a friendly against Hungary. He was 18 years old. He came on as a substitute but was sent off after just two minutes in Budapest.
This debut came two months after he starred in the 2005 Under-20 World Championship. He had scored both goals in Argentina's final victory.
From Heartbreak to Golden Years
His early international journey faced immense frustration. He suffered three consecutive defeats in major tournament finals. This led to a brief international retirement in 2016.
A public campaign led by Diego Maradona and the Argentine president convinced him to return. This return set the stage for the most successful period of his international career.
The Last Match
His final international match was the World Cup final against Spain on 19 July in New Jersey. Argentina lost 1-0 in extra time. Messi struggled physically during the match.
"I wanted to win it so I could bring the trophy to you and show you a new one. I couldn't, my legs had nothing left. This time I tried to push past my physical limits, but I couldn't. I never managed to feel right."
