President William Ruto has said no Kenyan should lose their life, liberty or dignity for criticising the government, expressing unpopular opinions or participating in peaceful demonstrations. Speaking during the 16th Katiba Day commemorations, Ruto acknowledged the pain of previous unrest, including deaths and allegations of unlawful arrests, enforced disappearances and lethal force. He called for credible claims to be independently investigated and urged that those found responsible face legal consequences.
