For Hafsa Sharif, Monday was more than another day at the University of Nairobi.

It was the moment a dream nurtured in a remote village on the outskirts of Wajir town finally began to take shape.

The 2025 KCSE top girl from Wajir East carried a dream of becoming a doctor.

The former Furqan Integrated Secondary School student made history after scoring an A plain of 81 points in the KCSE exam, becoming the first girl in the region to attain the coveted grade.

But the achievement was initially overshadowed by uncertainty.

When she spoke to the Star on January 17, shortly after the results were announced, Hafsa sounded subdued despite her achievement.

She had earned the grades required to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), but there was no certainty about how she would finance her university education.

Then came an unexpected turn of events.

After reading Hafsa’s story in the Star, Eldas MP Adan Keynan asked this writer for her contact details, reached out to her and offered to support her university education through his Adan Keynan Foundation (AKF).

The intervention changed everything.

Months later, Hafsa’s dream has become a reality. She has officially been admitted to the University of Nairobi to pursue her dream course.

Speaking after her admission, Hafsa contacted this writer to express her appreciation for highlighting her story, which ultimately brought her to the attention of the Eldas MP.

Accompanied by close relatives, Hafsa reflected on the journey that had taken her from a remote village in Makaror, on the outskirts of Wajir town, to the capital city and, finally, to the University of Nairobi.

“Honestly, I do not have enough words to fully express how grateful I am to you. I am where I am today because you highlighted my story, which then caught the MP’s attention. The sponsorship came as a result of your story,” she said.

“This experience has shown me just how powerful and transformative the media can be. Beyond informing the public, the media can give hope, amplify the voices of deserving people and open doors that may otherwise remain closed.”

For Hafsa, the scholarship means far more than financial assistance. It has allowed her to pursue a profession she has long dreamed of and given her confidence that her circumstances do not have to determine the limits of her ambitions.

“This is an opportunity that I will never take for granted,” she said.

Hafsa said the support had not only removed the financial burden but also strengthened her determination to work hard, remain focused on her studies and honour the faith that had guided her family throughout the journey ahead.

She vividly remembers the day Keynan invited her to his office and signed the sponsorship documents she needed for university.

“He advised me as a leader, as a father and, at times, as a good friend. He advised me to focus on my studies, maintain good morals as a Muslim girl and make something meaningful out of the opportunity I had been given,” she said.

For the young scholar, the experience has reinforced a powerful lesson.

“Sometimes, a young person’s biggest challenge is not lack of dreams, but having someone believe in those dreams enough to help make them possible,” Hafsa said.

For her mother, Fatuma Adan, the moment is equally emotional.

“I am extremely happy and lack the words to thank the Star for highlighting my daughter’s story, which ultimately saw the MP intervene,” she said.

“You were God-sent and as a family we will forever be indebted to you.”

Fatuma knows the journey ahead will not be easy. Medicine requires years of discipline, sacrifice and determination. But she believes the hardest part — getting the opportunity — has now been overcome.

“My daughter has started her journey of achieving her dreams. It is one step at a time, and slowly but surely, by the grace of God, she will get there,” she said.

An A plain of 81 points opened the door. The scholarship made it possible for her to walk through it. Now, the young woman from Wajir has embarked on what could be the most challenging and rewarding chapter of her life.
