Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Abdi has joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), marking a fresh political development ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Hassan was formally received into the party by Gachagua at DCP party headquarters on Tuesday, where he was presented with and made to wear a DCP cap before a crowd that had gathered at the residence.
“I am happy to join the DCP party because it is a party that wants the best for Kenyans. It is a party that wants change for Kenyans because they are tired of bad politics,” he said.
The move adds the veteran politician to Gachagua’s growing political outfit as the former Deputy President continues efforts to build support for DCP and strengthen his position within the opposition.
Yusuf was elected Kamukunji MP for a fourth consecutive term in the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket.
He garnered 34,264 votes, representing 56.23 per cent of the total votes cast, defeating UDA candidate Robow Hassan, who polled 22,644 votes.
Hassan had previously won the Kamukunji seat on a PNU ticket in 2011, before switching to The National Alliance (TNA) in 2013 and Jubilee in 2017.
His decision to join Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) therefore marks a shift from Jubilee, the party under which he secured his latest parliamentary victory.
Gachagua has in recent weeks turned his Wamunyoro residence into a key centre for political consultations, hosting leaders, delegations and supporters from different parts of the country.
The former Deputy President has also intensified calls for opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the opposition’s best chance of defeating President William Ruto lies in rallying behind a single candidate.
Yusuf's move to DCP could reshape the political dynamics in Kamukunji and Nairobi, where he has been a prominent political figure.
The development comes as Gachagua continues to expand the reach of his party beyond its traditional support base in the Mt Kenya region.
