Kenyan music duo Watendawili have shared an unusual experience they encountered while performing at a recent event, saying the audience had a very different reaction to their music.
The duo spoke about the experience during an interview on the Mic Cheque Podcast, where they discussed their music, performances and experiences in Kenya’s entertainment scene. The latest episode featuring the pair was published on August 23, 2026.
‘Walikuwa wanajua mangoma moja mbili’
According to the musicians, the event attracted what they described as a largely local audience. They said the crowd appeared familiar with only a few of their songs.

“Kuna mtu alikuwa anawambia time. Walikuwa wanajua mangoma? Wanajua moja mbili.”
Watendawili explained that the crowd was predominantly made up of men, and they described the audience as energetic.
However, they said some people in the crowd were not responding to the performance in the way they expected.
Instead, some audience members were calling for a different type of music and asking for musician Munga to perform.
‘Tunataka Domani’
The duo recalled hearing people in the crowd make demands during the performance.
“Wanaambiwa, wacheni kutingiza kiuno bana, toka. Wapi Munga? Tunataka Domani.”
The comments left the musicians in an awkward position as they tried to continue with their set.
Watendawili said they considered reminding the crowd that they were also from the local scene and were simply doing their job as performers.
“Nilitaka kuwaambia, oya, pia mimi ni wa mtaa, ni kazi.”
They also recalled that there was only one woman among the crowd who appeared to be fully engaged with what was happening on stage.
“Mrembo alikuwa mmoja alikua hapo katikati kati.”
Planning a Different Fan Experience
The comments come as Watendawili prepare to take their interaction with fans beyond the traditional concert format.
The duo announced plans for a two-hour fan session ahead of the second edition of Wozaa World.
The session is designed to allow fans to play games, talk with the musicians and create together, rather than simply watch them perform from the audience.
