Popular Kenyan comedian Timothy Kimani, popularly known as Njugush, has paid tribute to legendary Mugithi musician John DeMathew seven years after his death.
Njugush shared a special skit on August 18, 2026, recreating elements of the late singer's distinctive music-video style.
The tribute came on the seventh anniversary of DeMathew's death, bringing back memories of one of the most recognisable voices in Kikuyu music.

In the video, Njugush wears a fedora hat, an item closely associated with DeMathew's public image.
He also recreated the visual style commonly seen in Mugithi videos, including dancers performing in maize farms and energetic scene changes.
Alongside the video, Njugush wrote:
“Seven years later, he still rules the airwaves. R.I.P De Mathew. The catalogue ya Huyu Legend is crazy!!! seiyaa.”

Remembering John DeMathew
DeMathew, whose real name was John Ng'ang'a Mwangi, died on August 18, 2019, following a road accident near the Blue Post area along the Thika Superhighway.
He was returning to Nairobi after attending a fundraiser in support of fellow musician Peter Kigia's ailing child when his vehicle collided with a stationary lorry. He was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
At the time of his death, DeMathew was 52 and had built a career spanning decades.
The Standard reported that he had released more than 375 songs across 50 albums, underlining the size of his musical catalogue.
A Legacy That Continues
DeMathew was known for songs that addressed love, family, social issues and politics.
His music earned him a large following in the Kikuyu-speaking community and beyond.
His family recognised two wives, Sarafina Wairimu and Carolyne Waithera, during the funeral arrangements. He was also survived by seven children, according to reports at the time.
