Behind the familiar Qwetu student residences is a Kenyan entrepreneur whose journey from humble beginnings to the world of multimillion-shilling real estate is as remarkable as the buildings he helped create.
Edward Kirathe, the founder and CEO of Acorn Holdings, is the businessman credited with building the Qwetu brand into one of Kenya’s most recognisable purpose-built student accommodation providers.
Long before he became a major name in Kenya’s property sector, Kirathe was a university student studying Architecture at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
To support himself financially, he reportedly worked as a debt collector while pursuing his studies.

His early experiences gave him an understanding of both business and the realities faced by ordinary Kenyans.
After completing his studies and working in architecture, Kirathe ventured deeper into business and real estate.
He eventually founded Acorn Holdings, which would go on to become a major player in Kenya’s property market.
The company spotted an opportunity that many developers had overlooked: Kenya’s rapidly growing university population needed accommodation that went beyond the traditional hostel model.

That idea helped give birth to Qwetu Student Residences.
Instead of simply providing students with a room, Qwetu was designed around a modern student-living experience. Its residences feature furnished rooms, internet connectivity, study areas, recreational spaces, security and communal facilities.
The concept quickly gained popularity among students, particularly those attending universities in Nairobi.
Turning Student Housing Into Big Business
Qwetu’s growth demonstrated that student accommodation could become a serious investment opportunity in Kenya.
Acorn expanded its student-housing portfolio through different developments and also introduced Qejani, a more affordable accommodation brand targeting students looking for lower-cost options.
The company’s growth has attracted significant investment, helping Acorn establish itself as an important name in Kenya’s real estate industry.

The Businessman Behind the Brand
While thousands of students know the Qwetu name, fewer may know the entrepreneur behind it.
Kirathe’s story is a reminder that successful businesses do not always begin with enormous capital or established connections.
His journey reportedly started while he was still a student, working to make ends meet before eventually building a major property business.
Today, Qwetu has become much more than a collection of hostels. It represents a different approach to student accommodation in Kenya—and behind that transformation stands Edward Kirathe, the architect of a business empire that turned student housing into a major real estate opportunity.
