Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has secured a second term after winning 60 percent of votes cast in last week’s presidential election. His closest rival, Brian Mundubile, received nearly 38 percent. The Electoral Commission declared the results on Tuesday following an election that was largely peaceful, despite opposition claims of intimidation, arrests, violence and electoral irregularities. Hichilema, who first took office in 2021, defeated 13 challengers to retain the presidency.
