Sports journalist and radio presenter Stephen Mukangai has shared an emotional tribute following the burial of his father, Mzee Saulo Mang’alavo, who was laid to rest at his family home in Malava, Kakamega County, on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Mukangai took to social media after the burial to thank relatives, friends and well-wishers who stood with him and his family during the difficult period.
He said the support came in different forms, including financial contributions, prayers, comforting messages and physical presence during the funeral arrangements.
“Death is truly cruel. Hapa Norah bado haamini kwamba babu yake amefunikwa na mchanga.”

Mukangai Speaks About Norah’s Grief

In his tribute, Mukangai highlighted the pain experienced by his granddaughter, Norah, following the death of her grandfather.

He said Norah had struggled to understand that her grandfather had been buried and became emotional during the final farewell.

“Alilia sana, na kuona mtoto akipitia maumivu kama haya ni heartbreaking.”
The sports journalist said watching a child experience such pain made the loss even more difficult for the family.
Mukangai then confirmed that the family had laid his father to rest.
“Leo tumempumzisha mzee wangu.”

Friends Join Family to Say Goodbye

The burial brought together members of Mukangai’s family, friends and colleagues who travelled to Malava to pay their final respects to Mzee Saulo Mang’alavo.
Among those who attended were Mukangai’s close friends Walter Kinjo, Shaffie Zele and Hassan Mwana wa Ali.

Hassan Mwana wa Ali is a veteran sports broadcaster who has worked alongside Mukangai in Kenya’s radio and sports broadcasting circles. Mukangai himself is a familiar voice in sports broadcasting and has previously been associated with Radio Maisha.

‘You Are My People of Strength’

Reflecting on the days leading up to the burial, Mukangai expressed gratitude to everyone who supported his family.
He said he did not have enough words to thank those who contributed towards the funeral, prayed for the family, sent messages of comfort or attended the burial.
“Nyinyi ni watu wangu wa nguvu.”
He prayed that God would bless and protect everyone who stood with the family and reward them for their support.
“Mungu awabariki sana, awalinde na awazidishie mara dufu kwa kila mlilofanya kwa ajili yangu na familia yangu.”

‘Mzee Wangu, Pumzika kwa Amani’

Mukangai ended his tribute with a farewell to his father, saying the family had entrusted him to God.
“Mzee wangu, pumzika kwa amani. Tumemwachia Mungu.”
