Veteran Kenyan radio presenter Alex Mwakideu’s family has opened up about the changes they noticed in his hearing, with his three daughters sharing the everyday moments that first made them realise their father was struggling to hear them.
In a touching TikTok video, Mwakideu’s wife, Mariam, sat down with their daughters, Samira, Natania and Janiya, and asked them whether they had noticed anything unusual about their father’s hearing.
The relaxed family conversation quickly turned into an emotional account of how the girls began adapting to changes they could not immediately explain.
Rather than describing one major incident, the girls pointed to ordinary family interactions that gradually raised questions about their father’s hearing.

Each daughter recounted small, everyday moments that had become telltale signs. Samira said she would speak to her father and he simply would not respond, prompting her to repeat herself constantly.
Natania admitted she sometimes thought he was deliberately ignoring her, only to realise later that he genuinely could not hear her.

Janiya shared a particularly vivid observation: when the family watched movies together, her father would push the volume to 100, a level so loud it was uncomfortable for everyone else in the room, while he considered it perfectly normal.
"For him, he's saying it's okay," Mariam said, recalling how he would defend the blaring TV volume while the rest of the family struggled with the noise.
Mwakideu Opens Up About Seeking Help
Mwakideu has also spoken about his own experience after realising that his hearing was not functioning as it should.
The veteran broadcaster revealed that he sought medical attention and underwent examinations to establish what was causing the problem.
His decision to seek professional help came after the changes became noticeable in his daily interactions.
For a radio presenter whose career depends heavily on communication and listening, the experience has brought a different dimension to his relationship with sound.
