Veteran Kenyan musician Nazizi Hirji has opened up about the knee injury that left her relying on a crutch and knee brace for years, revealing how she eventually found relief after seeking an alternative to surgery.
Speaking during a sit-down interview shared on TikTok by Tia Clinics Africa, the celebrated artiste recounted her struggle with Grade 4 Chondromalacia patella, a severe condition affecting the cartilage beneath the kneecap.
She said the diagnosis was confirmed through an MRI scan, following years of persistent pain and limited mobility.
Nazizi explained that doctors recommended surgery after determining the extent of the damage. However, she said she was reluctant to undergo the procedure and began looking for other treatment options.

"The MRI showed I had Grade 4 Chondromalacia patella. Surgery was recommended, but I really wanted to avoid it," Nazizi said during the interview.
Looking for an alternative
According to the musician, her search for another option led her to a medical facility in Nairobi, where she underwent treatment aimed at addressing her knee condition without surgery.

"The next morning, I woke up and realised I could walk without the level of pain I had become used to," she said.
Nazizi explained that before seeking treatment, everyday activities had become difficult. She had relied on a knee brace and crutch to move around, with the injury affecting both her work and personal life.
Understanding Grade 4 Chondromalacia patella
Grade 4 Chondromalacia patella is considered the most severe stage of cartilage damage beneath the kneecap. The condition can cause chronic knee pain, swelling, stiffness and difficulty walking.
Medical experts note that treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition and the individual patient. Options may include physiotherapy, medication, lifestyle changes, injections or surgery in advanced cases.
An MRI scan is commonly used to assess cartilage damage and help doctors determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
