For many content creators, leaving formal employment for entertainment is often seen as a major turning point. However, the Kenyan comedy and content-creation group Matatasays that was never the case for them.
Speaking during an interview on the Sandwich Podcast hosted by Tony Kibz and Bad Boy Owen, the group explained that entertainment has always been part of their lifestyle rather than a career they consciously switched to.
Entertainment was always the plan.
When asked when they decided to pursue entertainment rather than conventional employment, the group dismissed the idea that they had ever worked in typical office jobs.

“There was never a point where we chose between entertainment and a 9-to-5. This has always been our lifestyle. We’ve never really had 9-to-5 jobs.”
They explained that although they all pursued higher education, each member followed different academic paths while continuing to build their creative careers.
One member noted thatMarcus first earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Development before later studying Cyber Security.
Freddy also shared his educational background, revealing he studied production and media, alongside film-related courses.
The theology degree that came by surprise
Perhaps the funniest revelation came when Freddy recounted how he unexpectedly found himself studying theology instead of business.
“My Bachelor’s in Theology wasn’t because I loved it. I was wrongly influenced,” he joked.
According to Freddy, he had intended to enrol in business school but left the university application process to someone else.
“At the time I was all over the place, so I wasn’t following up on my application. I left it to an older guy to handle.”
When he received confirmation that he had been admitted, he assumed he had secured a place in a business programme.
“I reported to school thinking I was going to study business. Then I realised he had enrolled me in Theology instead. That guy must have had a lot of sins—he wanted me to wash them away first,” he said, laughing.
Freddy explained that by the time he realised the mistake, changing courses was no longer an option.
“I was already there, so I couldn’t change. That’s the education I ended up pursuing.”
It was more than studying Christianity.
Although many assume theology focuses solely on Christianity, Freddy clarified that the programme had a much broader academic scope.
“It wasn’t just Theology. We studied religion from an educational perspective. We learnt about Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and other religions as well.”
