The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has announced plans to investigate the source and purpose of money distributed through handouts disguised as economic empowerment initiatives. EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud said distributing cheques and money was not in itself a crime, but the commission would scrutinise the source of the funds, the lifestyles of state officials presiding over such events and whether the handouts were intended to influence voters. He said state officials must account for such funds.
