Kenyan gospel musician and media personality Kambua has spoken candidly about the financial difficulties her family faced after her father, a professor at the University of Nairobi, lost his sight.
Speaking during an appearance on Lady Bishop Kathy Kiuna'sWoman Without Limits (WWL), Kambua recalled how her father's blindness changed the family's circumstances and affected their daily lives.
She said the situation placed significant pressure on the household, with her mother taking on the role of her father's full-time caregiver. As a result, the family experienced financial challenges that also affected Kambua during her school years.

"My father had very serious health challenges from the time I was finishing Standard Eight. Getting into high school is when my dad started getting really sick. Somewhere in high school, my dad went totally blind," she recalled.
Kambua explained that her mother's priorities shifted completely after her father's condition worsened.
She said her mother dedicated herself to caring for her husband, leaving little time for other responsibilities. One of the effects was that Kambua often missed the family visiting days at school because her mother could not travel while caring for her father.

Despite the emotional challenges, she said she understood why her mother could not always be present.
"On visiting day, you're really looking forward to your family coming to see you. We started off really well, and then somewhere along the way it was only my mom who could come."
School Fees Became a Major Challenge
Kambua also revealed that paying school fees became increasingly difficult as the family's financial situation deteriorated.
According to the singer, there were times when outstanding fees threatened to interrupt her education.
However, she credited her school headmistress for showing compassion during that period by allowing her to remain in school despite the unpaid balance.
Kambua described the decision as one of the defining moments in her education, saying it gave her the opportunity to complete her secondary school studies.
"My headmistress told my dad, 'Kambua is one of my best students. She cannot be home because of school fees. Let her come and finish. You and I will sort this thing out later.'"
