JAVAS BIGAMBO/HANDOUTThe politics of the opposition is deeply rooted in personal conquests and interests, which are, of course, the taproot of the sustained divisions within the opposition.
There are two factions: the Linda Mwananchi faction and the so-called alternative government, or united opposition, yet both purport to be in opposition to the government of President William Ruto.
It only demonstrates that the very purpose or reason for which they are using the opposition platform is not actually in the interest of pursuing and seizing power through the ballot in 2027.
Rather, it is a pursuit of personal conquest that is not rooted in any ideological foundation or solid political cause, but in individual political ambitions. That is why they are speaking at cross purposes.
They are not united in purpose or thought. They are united only in the broad sense that they are outside the mainstream government.
The possibility of the opposition uniting and presenting a cohesive front ahead of 2027 is extremely remote.
It is remote because the reasons for which they occupy their current political positions do not reflect shared interests. The two factions do not mirror each other.
Secondly, they do not have any guardrails guiding their campaigns.
For instance, when Rigathi Gachagua read the riot act to the Linda Mwananchi faction and Governor Irungu Kang'ata, he warned them, and Kang'ata in particular, against going to Nyandarua, specifically Ol Kalou.
That, in itself, was a clear demonstration that Gachagua does not want to work with the other opposition leaders. He wants only himself and the DCP to be the leading voices of the opposition.
Another point is he has never toured any part of the country with the DCP alone. He has never done so.
On the other hand, the Linda Mwananchi faction is touring the Mt Kenya region without him. That does not sit well with him.
If you look at the President, he is busy implementing his manifesto. His team is cohesive and united. That is where the difference lies.
