A clinical officer has attributed the reported increase in sexually transmitted infections to improved surveillance and greater public awareness rather than a sudden surge in new infections. Joash Agutu of AHF Mathare Medical and Wellness Centre says stronger reporting systems, health education and campaigns to reduce stigma have encouraged more people to seek screening and treatment. He says STIs have long existed but are now being detected and reported more effectively.
