The government plans to put an additional 300,000 to 400,000 acres under irrigation as part of efforts to boost food production. National Irrigation Authority CEO Charles Muasya says the long-term goal is to make Kenya self-sufficient in maize, rice and sugar before exporting surplus produce to neighbouring countries. The government also aims to increase the country's irrigated land to more than 2.5 million acres through investments in dams and irrigation infrastructure.
