The nightmare of travelling to Western has persisted for far too long. Last Friday's gridlock on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, which left many motorists stranded overnight, underscored the urgent need for expanded transport infrastructure.
During Christmas and other peak seasons, the situation becomes intolerable.
It is therefore encouraging that construction of the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit dual carriageway is gathering pace, alongside the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway.
Together, these projects promise faster, safer and more reliable movement of people and goods while easing chronic congestion on one of Kenya's busiest corridors.
The gains will extend beyond transport. Better connectivity will stimulate trade, lower the cost of doing business, open markets for farmers and manufacturers, attract investment and spur economic growth across Western and beyond.
But enthusiasm must not replace vigilance. These multibillion-shilling projects must be delivered on time, within budget and without corruption. Kenyans deserve value for every shilling spent.
Transparent procurement, strict oversight and quality workmanship are non-negotiable. Infrastructure should be remembered not for inflated costs and scandals but for transforming lives and strengthening the economy.
