Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor faced a tense moment on Saturday night during the Vurugu 2 boxing and entertainment event in Nairobi after sections of the crowd broke into “Wantam” chants when he was introduced on stage.
The incident occurred when the MC attempted to invite the MP to greet the audience. As his name was announced, parts of the crowd responded loudly with the chants, disrupting the flow of the programme.
Witnesses at the event said the reaction grew louder within seconds, making it difficult for the MC to proceed with the planned introduction.
“Wantam! Wantam!” sections of the crowd were heard chanting repeatedly as the introduction continued.

During the moment, Jalang’o appeared not fully engaged with the introduction as the chants intensified. The MC attempted to proceed with the greeting segment, but the atmosphere remained unsettled.

Obinna Steps In to Restore Order
The situation was eventually taken over by host Oga Obinna, who stepped in to address the crowd directly.
Obinna urged calm and reminded attendees to allow the programme to continue without disruption. He acknowledged the energy in the room but insisted on order so the event could move forward.
“We need to continue the show,” he told the audience while attempting to settle the moment. Obinna instructed DJ Nickde to play music for about 10 minutes. The move was intended to cool down the atmosphere and allow the programme to reset before continuing.
The music break shifted attention back to entertainment, helping organisers regain control of the crowd and restore the flow of the event.
Event Resumes After Disruption
After the brief interruption, the Vurugu 2 programme continued with its scheduled boxing matches and performances.
