The Somali Boxer has finally broken his silence regarding the sudden changes to the Vurugu 2.0 fight card. Revealing exclusively to Mpasho journalist Moses Sagwe, the fighter opened up about the anti-climax of his original opponent pulling out just days before the event.
The highly anticipated bout was scheduled for 20 June at the Sarit Centre. However, the withdrawal of his opponent, Majembe, sent shockwaves through the local boxing community.
A Last-Minute Disappointment
The Somali Boxer did not hide his frustration when he heard the news. He described the moment as a major letdown after a grueling preparation period.
"I felt disappointed considering all the effort we had put in, and getting the anti-climax from Majembe at the last minute wasn't something we had anticipated," he told Mpasho.
Months of Gruelling Preparation
Preparation for a professional fight is never easy. The Somali Boxer revealed that he had been in a consistent training cycle for a long time.
He had recently completed a fight in Uganda, but did not take a break. Instead, he jumped straight back into intense training specifically for the Majembe fight, a process that lasted for months and continued until the very week of the scheduled bout.
"As a professional boxer, you are always ready for any challenge that is to come."
Quashing the Rumours
Following Majembe’s exit, rumours began to circulate that Mbavu Destroyer would step into the ring. The Somali Boxer was quick to dismiss these claims as mere speculation.
He confirmed that a replacement has already been secured and the paperwork is complete. Mahmud Muhsin is the man who will now face him on 20 June.
"I believe that's just a rumour," he clarified. "We have an opponent already who has replaced Majembe (Mahmud Muhsin) and contracts are already signed. So Mbavu is just a rumour, maybe a fight for Vurugu 3."
Studying the New Target
Pivoting to a new fighter at the eleventh hour requires a sharp mental shift. The Somali Boxer explained that his strategy involves a deep dive into film study.
To prepare for Mahmud Muhsin, he is watching previous fight clips and YouTube videos to understand his new opponent's style. He maintains that his commitment to the Vurugu stage remains unchanged, regardless of who stands across from him.
“The ideal opponent was Majembe, but since the cancellation of the fight, we move on to the next opponent, with the same mindset and same energy,” he added.
Why Majembe Pulled Out
Majembe withdrew from the Vurugu 2 boxing match due to what he described as contractual disputes and restrictive clauses in the fight deal rather than financial disagreements.
This late withdrawal forced organisers to scramble for a replacement, which has now been confirmed as Mahmud Muhsin.
The Somali Boxer also had a message for young, aspiring boxers who might be discouraged by such sudden changes in the sport. He emphasised that flexibility is a requirement for anyone wanting to turn professional.
"Change is inevitable, but as a professional fighter, always be ready for unforeseen changes."
He urged upcoming athletes to always stayready and never deviate from their established training routines, even when the finish line moves.
