After the grand launch of his presidential campaign platform, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka now faces the difficult task of converting political goodwill into a viable bid for the presidency in 2027.

The veteran politician, who has spent much of his career serving in supporting roles within successive opposition formations, must now convince both allies and voters that he is the best-placed leader to spearhead the campaign against President William Ruto.
Ruto is seeking a second and final term in office in the 2027 elections.
Unlike previous election cycles, the road ahead is crowded with formidable opposition figures, each nurturing presidential ambitions of their own.
Some of the opposition hopefuls include Rigathi Gachagua (DCP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Martha Karua (PLP), Justin Muturi (DP) and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
Adding another layer of complexity is the growing political profile of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, whose increasing visibility through the Linda Mwananchi movement has further complicated calculations within the anti-Ruto camp.
For Kalonzo, the first and perhaps most important hurdle will be persuading opposition partners that he represents the strongest candidate capable of mounting a credible challenge against the incumbent.
While many within the opposition agree on the need for unity, consensus on who should carry the presidential flag remains elusive.
Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, a close confidant of Kalonzo, argues that the former vice president possesses the experience, temperament and national outlook required to lead Kenya at a critical moment in its history.
"He will rebuild trust, restore Kenya's dignity, renew the promise of our Republic, and lead the next generation towards a country worthy of its hopes, talents and dreams," Wambua said.
The senator said Kalonzo offers a style of leadership grounded in experience, resilience and principle, qualities he believes distinguish him from many of the other opposition hopefuls.
"Kalonzo offers leadership grounded in experience, tested by adversity and guided by principle. He remains steadfast in his commitment to the people of Kenya," he added.
A similar view is held by Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, who believes the 2027 election presents the best opportunity yet for Kalonzo to finally ascend to the presidency.
Speaking to the Star, Mwangangi argued that Kalonzo's extensive political experience, national appeal and consistent advocacy for democratic reforms place him ahead of his rivals within the opposition ranks.
"I strongly believe it is Kalonzo's moment and the journey we started when we unveiled his presidential bid through Wiper Patriotic continues," Mwangangi said.
"He is known for bringing people together. This country will be much safer under Kalonzo and will transform economically under Kalonzo more than under anyone else."
Despite enjoying a reputation as a moderate and experienced politician, Kalonzo will inevitably face questions about whether he possesses the nationwide appeal necessary to defeat a sitting president.
Critics argue that while he remains one of Kenya's most recognisable political figures, he has struggled in the past to translate personal popularity into an electoral majority.
According to political commentator Martin Andati, Kalonzo has a lot to do to convince the opposition team that he is the right man to face Ruto.
"He needs to create some energy. He needs to create some vibe. People are not feeling him," Andati said.
"If he is not careful, he will be forced into a Biden-Obama moment, where Obama became President and Biden the running mate. In this case, Sifuna becomes the Obama."
Beyond coalition politics lies another challenge that has historically shaped presidential contests in the country — the financial war chest.
Running a national campaign requires enormous financial resources, extensive grassroots networks, robust mobilisation structures and sustained visibility across all corners of the country.
Recognising the scale of the task ahead, Kalonzo last week hosted a high-profile fundraising dinner that reportedly raised millions of shillings towards his presidential campaign.
The event also served as the launchpad for his digital presidential campaign platform, a strategy that allies believe could significantly enhance his outreach, particularly among young voters who increasingly consume political content online.
Wambua described the digital platform as a game-changing innovation capable of transforming the way campaigns are conducted in Kenya.
"I saw, participated in and witnessed how a similar initiative delivered a landslide presidential victory for President Obama and the Democrats in 2008," he said.
"From campaign resource mobilisation and data consumption and analysis, to a strong digital structure and infrastructure, and a systematic encoding and decoding of information — this is it.
"Kenya's 2027 presidential election victory is firmly in our hands."
Equally significant in Kalonzo's quest is the battle for his traditional political backyard of Ukambani.
For decades, Kalonzo has enjoyed overwhelming support across the region, making it one of his strongest bargaining chips whenever coalition negotiations arise.
Unlike previous elections, the political landscape in Ukambani is becoming increasingly fluid, with some leaders from the region now openly embracing President Ruto's re-election bid, while others are gravitating towards alternative political formations such as the Linda Mwananchi movement.
These developments have introduced new intrigue into what was once considered Kalonzo's unquestioned stronghold.
Political analysts, however, argue that the Wiper leader must go all out in his quest, saying his candidature has yet to trigger excitement.
"Kalonzo will be a nice compromise candidate, but again, Sifuna is also coming out strongly. Many of the people who want change in the country see that being delivered by Sifuna," Herman Manyora said.
Another concern frequently raised by critics relates to Kalonzo's national footprint.
Opponents argue that much of his activity has remained concentrated in Eastern Kenya, with limited visibility in critical battleground regions such as North Eastern, Central Kenya, Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the Coast.
To emerge as a serious national contender, analysts say he must expand beyond his traditional support bases and go all out in seeking votes across the country.
