Legendary Ugandan musician Jose Chameleone, born Joseph Mayanja, has reportedly reached a landmark agreement to end his marriage with his estranged wife, Daniella Atim. The deal follows a protracted legal battle and more than five years of living apart.
According to reports from Uganda, the couple has settled on a monthly child support figure of Ugx 7.5 million (approximately Ksh 259,500). This payment is intended for the upkeep of their five children.
The Financial Terms
The agreement was reached after months of court-ordered mediation before Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga of the High Court. While the deal is not yet final, it awaits a signature from the Justice to become legally binding.
Under the terms, Atim will retain custody of their five children: Abba, Alpha, Amma, Alba, and Xara. Chameleone has been granted visitation rights.
"It is alleged that following a series of meetings, Jose Chameleone accepted to remit two thousand US dollars monthly as upkeep for the children,” one source said.
A Marriage Under Strain
The couple originally exchanged vows in June 2008 at St James Catholic Parish in Kampala. However, the marriage faced significant complications that led Atim to seek refuge in the United States with their children five years ago.
Atim filed for divorce citing desertion, cruelty, and adultery. She stated in her affidavit that the marriage had broken down irretrievably due to a lack of love, affection, and empathy.
“There is no collusion, condonation, or connivance as to the dissolution of the marriage between us,” Atim stated in her affidavit.
Marital Property and Assets
The division of their marital property remains a complex issue. Some reports suggest that the court ordered both parties to split their shares 50/50. Other reports indicate that the final determination of assets will be handled separately by the Family Division of the High Court.
One specific detail involves the family's Seguku house. It is alleged that the court agreed Chameleone should keep it as a family home, allowing both him and Atim access at any time. Previously, Chameleone had publicly defended his assets, stating they were intended for his children rather than his wife.
With the mediation phase largely concluded, the "Valu Valu" singer and Atim appear ready to officially part ways, ending nearly two decades of a highly publicised relationship.
