A generation ago, a degree was often viewed as a reliable passport to stability. For many families across Africa, education represented the clearest path toward economic mobility, dignity, and opportunity. A certificate on the wall was more than proof of learning; it was reassurance that the future could be secure.

Today, however, the relationship between education and employability is becoming far more complex.

Even highly educated professionals are increasingly returning to classrooms, online platforms, certification programmes, and short courses to remain relevant in an economy being reshaped by climate change, technology, automation, and rapid industrial transformation. Across industries, there is growing recognition that qualifications alone are no longer enough. The future workforce will require adaptability, continuous learning, and practical skills that align with emerging realities.

Climate change, in particular, is no longer simply an environmental issue. It is quietly becoming an economic issue, a workforce issue, and increasingly, a survival issue.

It is reshaping agriculture, infrastructure, energy systems, logistics, construction, manufacturing, and even the nature of technical work itself. Entire industries are being forced to rethink how they operate, what they produce, and the kinds of skills their workforce will require in the years ahead.

This means the future workforce will not simply need credentials, rather, it will also need to have climate relevance.

Africa faces a unique paradox. It has one of the youngest populations in the world, yet many education systems are still preparing learners for economies that are rapidly evolving, or in some cases, disappearing altogether. While the world debates the future of green economies, artificial intelligence, energy transition, and climate resilience, many young people are still being trained using models designed for a very different era.

The danger is not education itself, it is in the stagnation behind the education system.

In many societies, education is still viewed as a destination rather than a lifelong process of adaptation. Yet the modern economy increasingly rewards those who can continuously evolve their skills in response to changing realities.

Climate Change Is Changing the Nature of Work. 

This shift is already visible across professions. The electrician of tomorrow will need to understand how to install and maintain solar energy systems in addition to traditional electrical wiring.

The farmer of tomorrow will need to interpret weather data, adopt climate-smart irrigation systems, and manage unpredictable growing conditions.

The mechanic of tomorrow will need to diagnose electric vehicle battery systems and software faults, not only repair combustion engines.

Even office-based professions are changing. Sustainability literacy is increasingly becoming relevant in finance, procurement, architecture, communications, policy, supply chain management, and corporate leadership itself.

Climate change is no longer changing weather patterns alone, it is changing workforce expectations.

More importantly, this conversation should not be reduced to a debate between degrees and technical training. That would oversimplify a much larger issue.

Degrees remain important foundations of research, analytical thinking, professional competence, and innovation. Universities must continue to play a critical role in shaping scientists, engineers, doctors, educators, policymakers, and researchers that society depends on. At the same time, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions must serve as the frontline infrastructure that sit at the intersection of learning and implementation, translating broad policy ambitions into real-world capability.

From Qualification-First to Skills-First Thinking

The future economy will reward adaptability more than qualifications alone.

This is where the conversation must evolve from qualification-first thinking toward a broader skills-first mindset.

A skills-first mindset does not diminish formal education. No. It recognizes that in a rapidly changing world, learning cannot end at graduation. Whether someone holds a degree, diploma, or vocational certification, the ability to continuously upskill, reskill, and respond to emerging realities may ultimately become the true measure of employability.

Countries that successfully navigate the green transition may not necessarily be those with the largest economies, but those capable of rapidly building practical workforce capability.

This is why TVET institutions should not merely be viewed as alternative pathways for those who miss university entry. If properly strengthened, they have the potential to prepare young people not only for the practical realities of a climate-changing world. They can become hubs for renewable energy training, circular economy practices, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable construction, water management, green manufacturing, and future-focused entrepreneurship.

At the same time, universities, professional institutions, and corporate learning systems must also evolve. The future belongs to ecosystems of learning that encourage flexibility, interdisciplinary thinking, and lifelong adaptation.

Ultimately, when we leap frog to several years from now, we will not be judged by how many certificates we produced, but by whether we prepared a generation capable of adapting, solving problems, and thriving in a rapidly changing world.
