The renewed attention comes just days after Karen Nyamu faced criticism over remarks she made during a Senate session involving visiting students.
The controversy began after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna invited a female senator to welcome learners visiting Parliament. During her remarks, Nyamu made comments that many lawmakers and Kenyans online considered inappropriate given that the learner was a minor.
“Mr Speaker, I wanted you to clarify the nature of the service she is offering because I saw some senators really excited to see her,” Nyamu said during the session.
Formal Apology in the Senate
The remarks triggered backlash both online and within the Senate, eventually prompting the Speaker to direct the nominated senator to issue a formal apology.
Nyamu later apologised to the Senate, the learner involved, her family, and members of the public.
“I acknowledge that the utterances were inappropriate and fell short of the dignity, decorum and respect expected of a state officer,” she stated.
The Speaker accepted the apology but cautioned her against making similar remarks in future proceedings.
