A 68-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly peddling bhang in Athi River, Machakos County.

Teresia Mwikali was nabbed after she was found in possession of the outlawed drugs within Athi River Township on Friday.

Mwikali was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives attached to both Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU).

The officers found the granny in possession of bhang she was allegedly trafficking aboard a bodaboda.

A detective privy to the incident told the Star that the suspect was arrested at the main entrance of Mutete Flats, approximately 300 metres from Athi River Primary school.

It was an intelligence led swoop.

"Acting on a tip off, the team laid an ambush at the said scene where the suspect was intercepted while riding pillion on a motorcycle," he said.

The granny disgused a passenger who was headed to the market.

It's suspected that she has been distributing narcotics in Athi River and its environs.

The detectives made a swift search of the suspect and recovered three bags filled with bhang.

The woman later led the officers to her residence where further search recoverd a basket and clear polythene bag both loaded with more bhang.

She was taken to Muthaiga police station for processing pending arraignment in court. Recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits.

The incident happenned barely a month since four people, three women and a man were arrested for allegedly engaging in the same business, trafficking of narcotics in Athi River.

The four were nabbed by a team of ANU and TOCU detectives, attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi.

They were smoked from their hideouts in the town's Kisumu Ndogo slum where consignments of bhang were recovered.

The officers extended the operation to one of the suspects house at Ngimo estate along the Mombasa Road where more bhang was recovered.

They were all taken to Muthaiga police station and later arraigned in court.
