Kenya Prisons Commissioner General Patrick Aranduh speaks during the event/KPS

The Kenya Prisons Service has intensified efforts to improve healthcare standards in correctional facilities following the conclusion of a key sensitisation workshop for prison health officers.

The fifth and final workshop, held at the Prisons Staff Training College, was officially opened by Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh, who lauded the role of partners in strengthening health systems within places of detention.

The initiative is part of an ongoing collaboration between KPS, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery, infrastructure, and staff capacity in prisons.

Aranduh said the partnership has significantly improved both physical and mental healthcare services for inmates and prison staff.

“This collaboration has provided a valuable platform for our medical personnel to share best practices and build a more responsive and resilient prison health system,” he said.

He added that the programme has strengthened service readiness across facilities.

“We are seeing real impact in how healthcare is delivered within our institutions, and this is key to upholding the dignity of persons deprived of liberty,” he noted.

Representatives from ICRC and KRCS who spoke during the event commended the Kenya Prisons Service for its commitment to sustaining the initiative.

“We appreciate the dedication shown by KPS in prioritising health in detention. Continued collaboration will be critical in advancing standards and ensuring consistent care,” Mariko Mavko said.

Senior officers present included Commandant Angus Masoro, Director of Rehabilitation and Welfare Priscilla Majere, and Director of Medical Services Wanganga, among others.

The programme, which has been ongoing over the past months, has brought together prison health officers in a series of structured workshops aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in correctional facilities.

Implemented by the Service in partnership with the ICRC and KRCS, the initiative has focused on building staff capacity, strengthening health systems, and promoting best practices in both physical and mental healthcare within places of detention.

Its conclusion marks a significant milestone in KPS’s broader reform agenda, reinforcing its commitment to improving healthcare services and aligning prison health systems with international standards on health in detention.
