Church leaders in Elgeyo Marakwet County have held a special interdenominational prayer session at Kamariny Stadium, seeking divine intervention for the successful completion of the facility, ahead of the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The clergy, drawn from various churches across the county, congregated at the stadium grounds, where they offered prayers and expressed optimism that the long-awaited project would be completed without further delays.

The leaders emphasised the significance of the stadium, describing it as a transformative investment poised to nurture young talent, promote sports development and open up economic opportunities for the youth.

They noted that the project holds both social and economic value, adding that once operational, the stadium is expected to boost local revenue streams for the county government, while enhancing Elgeyo Marakwet’s status as a hub for athletics.

The prayer session comes amid challenges that have previously slowed down construction of the facility, including financial constraints, shortages of building materials and concerns over the contractor’s slow performance.

However, the church leaders expressed confidence that through prayer and unity, this time round, the project will overcome these hurdles.

“We have come together as servants of God to dedicate this project and pray against any obstacles that may hinder its completion,” said Aron Kwambai, Chairperson of the Pastors Fellowship in Elgeyo Marakwet.

“We believe that there will be no more stagnation and that by Mashujaa Day on October 20, this stadium will be complete.”

Kwambai also thanked President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for their commitment to the project, noting that the announcement that this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will be held in Elgeyo Marakwet has accelerated efforts to finalise the stadium.

“We pray that God will bless the government with sufficient resources and guide the contractors to deliver quality work on time.”

The clergy also extended a warm welcome to the President, expressing gratitude for granting the county the honour of hosting the national celebrations.

Reflecting on the historical significance of the venue, Kwambai noted that Kamariny Stadium was formerly a showground that hosted notable dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II during her past visit to Kenya.

“This stadium has a rich history. It was once a showground opened by Queen Elizabeth in the late 1950s, and today it stands as a symbol of our heritage and future,” he said.

The Church leaders reiterated that this was the first formal spiritual dedication of the stadium project, expressing hope that it marks a turning point towards its completion.

They further observed that Elgeyo Marakwet is globally recognised for producing elite athletes, many of whom train within the county.

The much-anticipated completion of Kamariny Stadium is therefore expected to provide a modern training facility, enabling local and international athletes to train and compete at higher levels.

“We are optimistic that once completed, this stadium will restore the region’s sporting glory and provide a platform for athletes to compete both nationally and internationally,” Kwambai added.

The leaders urged all stakeholders, including government agencies, contractors, and the local community to work collaboratively to ensure the project is delivered in time for the national event.
