A routine roadblock along the Thika–Garissa Highway has exposed what police describe as a potential security threat after a passenger bus was found transporting ammunition and suspected government stores.

The vehicle, which was travelling from Lamu County to Nairobi, was intercepted at Kanyonyoo by a multi-agency security team during a standard inspection, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

What began as an ordinary check quickly escalated when officers stumbled upon a suspicious blue metallic box in the luggage compartment.

A search of the box uncovered 19 rounds of 7.62x51mm G3 live ammunition and 116 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 live ammunition. Officers also recovered two empty AK-47 magazines and two machetes.

Further raising alarm was the discovery of items believed to be government stores, including a full set of General Service Unit (GSU) ceremonial attire, two GSU combat jackets, three jungle green trousers and a red beret.

Preliminary investigations indicate the consignment had been booked as a parcel at the Mokowe booking office in Lamu but lacked sender details—an anomaly investigators say points to possible criminal intent.

The driver and conductor were arrested and detained at Kanyonyoo Police Station alongside the vehicle and recovered items as investigations continue.

Police say they are now pursuing leads to identify those behind the shipment and dismantle any criminal network linked to the consignment.

The DCI has urged Kenyans to report suspicious activities through its anonymous channels as efforts to tighten security intensify.

Meanwhile, in Embu County, detectives have recovered suspected stolen property following a targeted operation into a wave of violent robberies.

For weeks, investigators had been tracking multiple robbery-with-violence incidents that unsettled residents and traders, before acting on intelligence to raid a shop in Embu Town believed to be linked to the crimes.

One suspect was arrested during the operation, with officers recovering assorted mobile phones, laptops and decoders suspected to have been stolen.

The suspect remains in custody as police work to uncover the full extent of the syndicate and track down additional accomplices.

The National Police Service said the operation is part of sustained efforts to curb rising crime and restore public confidence, adding that similar crackdowns will continue to dismantle organised criminal groups.

Authorities have once again called on the public to remain vigilant and share information that could support ongoing investigations.
