
Police are investigating an incident in which an 18-year-old student died after electrocution at a construction site in Ongata Rongai.
Police said the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, at around 11:30am. in the Olerai area within Ongata Rongai township.
The deceased, identified as Nelson Ochieng, was a Form 4 student at Njiru Secondary School.
He had reportedly been sent by his father to deliver cement to a store within a nearby construction site but failed to return home.
Concerned by the delay, a relative went to check on him and found him lying unconscious at the site.
An alarm was raised and with the help of construction workers, the student was rushed to Wanaichi Private Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers visited both the scene and the hospital, confirming the incident.
Preliminary observations indicated the body had visible injuries on the right ankle and upper right arm.
Officers also noted exposed live electric cables at the construction site, believed to have caused the fatal electrocution.
The body was later taken to Ongata Rongai Subcounty Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Such incidents have been blamed on illegal power connections and the use of unqualified electricians. There is a campaign to address the issue.
In a separate incident, a 22-year-old man died after drowning in a well at Kivoloini village in Kathiani, Machakos county.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 12 noon and was reported the following day.
The deceased, identified as James Mutuku Muli, was reportedly fetching water for domestic use when the incident happened.
Police officers visited the scene and found the body already retrieved from the well. The deceased’s father said his son had been suffering from epilepsy. It is suspected that he may have experienced a seizure and fallen into the well while drawing water.
The body was discovered by a relative who had also gone to fetch water from the same well.
The scene was processed and documented by investigators. The body was taken to Machakos Funeral Home mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem.
Police have opened an inquest file as investigations into the incident continue, officials said on Wednesday.
